Artists catalogue and paper samples
‘Paper takes flight’ is the title of the book and art catalogue that will be published on the occasion of the Holland Paper Biennial 2006, the international exhibition of paper art to be held from June 10 to September 10 in the Museum Rijswijk and the Museum of Apeldoorn / CODA. It is a real collector’s item for paper art enthusiasts.
The title of the book was inspired by the efforts of anthropologist and conservation specialist René Teijgeler to save libraries and book collections in Iraq from destruction. The editors have arranged a series of articles around the theme ‘paper and disaster’.
Articles and writers
Henk Porck and Bihanne Wassink describe a deliberate book burning that was arranged by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek in collaboration with the fire brigade in The Hague in order to learn more about the way to treat books with fire damage. After a disaster has struck cardboard houses are put in place quickly and cheaply. Taco van Iersel and Elise van Dooren write about this new form of ‘disposable architecture’. Iraqi poet Salah Hasan describes his own flight without identity papers and introduces us to some of his poems. The Dutch Golden Age is well represented with three stories. Historian and journalist Roelof van Gelder is the first to open the personal and ship’s letters of Dutch sailors whose ships were taken by British pirates, four centuries after the fact. In the same era Dutch traders were transporting paper wrapped in so-called riemkappen (ream covers). Veronica van Verschuer tells the story of these paper wrappings, made of bulkier paper and carrying the mark of the paper mill that produced them. The story is based of the book by Henk Voorn and his collection of riemkappen that days have become true collector’s items. Frans Laurentius provides an analysis of the different seventeenth century paper formats and reveals the puzzling fact that collectors used to pay for the size of the paper rather than for the artist who made the picture. Koos Havelaar discusses the more recent history of airmail and its special types of paper. Protecting security paper is the subject of Karel Schel’s contribution. It gives an overview of the fight against counterfeiting through the centuries until the present day.
